Bailout Or Not, It Won't Hurt Me!

When I saw that the bailout was defeated, one of the Democrats that voted "Nay", or No, on the bill was Jose Serrano from the Bronx, New York. Unfortunately, the Bronx happens to be one of the poorest counties, if not the poorest, in the entire United States of America. Interestingly enough, we're only 30-45 min train ride away from Wall Street. Jose Serrano made a very serious point and it was something that crossed my mind briefly last week: How would I benefit from this bailout deal?

Let's take a step back. Why is the bailout necessary?

Part of the purpose of the bailout is so that banks can have money to lend small businesses the money necessary to pay their employees. This is the argument from US Rep Barney Frank. Without the money from lending institutions, companies will have to start letting people go causing more joblessness. While I appreciate Barney Frank's support for marijuana decriminalization, I have to call BULLSHIT on this. At what point does a business start paying off its debt if that business has to constantly take out loans to keep afloat? This is what's referred to as a failing business.

Allow me to digress a bit here. When one sets up a business, the purpose is to make a profit. If I am wrong about that, I didn't learn anything in Economics class in high school and my BBA in Marketing Management is truly just a piece of paper. If a company is repeatedly taking on debt to fund its business, that means it isn't making the money necessary to fund its own operations. The other scenario is that the business wants to grow. This makes sense if that business is doing better than expected as opposed to someone who imagines that business is better than expected. I know there are other situations where a business might need a loan but I want to keep things simple. The point is that a business shouldn't need loans to stay in operation. That's a failed business.

I've digressed enough. Let's get back to the point.

The people of the Bronx, primarily Black and Hispanic, don't get see a bit of the wealth that Wall Street sees.< While the people do work down there, they do mostly menial jobs - food service, custodial work, doorman, and so on. We can see the difference everytime we take the train.

In the movie, A Brother From Another Planet, there's a scene where the alien rides the 2 train. He meets a man on the train who performs some tricks for him. He'll make all the white people disappear at 96th street. By the time the doors close, the alien is amazed at this guy's magical ability. What he didn't know, being a new arrival to New York City, is that 96 street is pretty much the stop before you get to Harlem, a primarily African American neighborhood. Although today, gentrification of the neighborhood is doing a good job of pushing African Americans out of Harlem. Although, you may find a few white people that will stay on the train, you can still witness this phenomenon of socioeconomic disparity today. And, Harlem is a long way before you get to the Bronx.

There I go digressing again. It's difficult not to do so without pointing out the reasons why poor people shouldn't care about this bailout. But, I think I am starting to give the idea of the situation at hand.

Here, in the Bronx, people are poor. We're unemployed, underemployed, and disassociated from the system as a whole. Jose Serrano said that when times are good, the people of the Bronx don't see it. If the New York City area could be compared to a slave-era plantation, the Bronx is where the field niggers stay. Just like the enslaved in those days, we make the best of a horrible situation. But, when something goes wrong at the master's house, it still makes no difference to us. It ain't our business and it ain't our problem. I don't care about Wall Street nor Main Street.

I survive on Low Income Avenue around the corner from Broke Boulevard.

    Reagan Gomez-Preston On King Mag

Yesterday we were reminiscing on Reagan Gomez-Preston the same way Robert Townsend probably most likely did as well. In this November issue that hits stands Oct. 14th, King also has a spread with 41 year old, Darlene Ortiz aka Scotty Appleton's ex-squeeze, who will be recreating this shot from Ice-T's Power cover. Take a trip back to new jack after the jump.

    Darlene Ortiz

Do not ever in the history of niggadom front. That's a bad woman.

And finally, I just find it hella ironic that their Web Girl of The Week is named Skeete.

Seven Pounds Trailer Starring Will Smith

First, watch this trailer. Then tell me if you can tell what the hell its about. Perhaps you are smarter than me. But when I read the title Seven Pounds, I'm thinking Will Smith has the last working man goo alive and he must repopulate Earth starting with Rosario Dawson. And the twist -- He's a real live angel! I have no idea how a blind Woody Harrelson fits in any of this.

And that just might be a good plot. But no. Of course I'm dead wrong. I'm a bit tired of these over-the-head, show you a lil' here and blast you with a date trailers. Just be upfront. The trailer failed. Hell after watching the trailer, I had to do a lil' searching on IMDB to find out what the hell this movie's about. Which says:

Ben (Will Smith) is an IRS agent who is depressed and guilt-ridden about mistakes from his past. He sets out to make amends by helping seven strangers. When he meets Emily (Rosario Dawson), a beautiful woman with a heart condition, he falls in love with her, thereby complicating his plans. Woody Harrelson also appears as a blind pianist who befriends Ben.

What? You can't have possibly got that out of what you just saw! That sounds boring to me. Sounds like a very unfunny 1 hour longer version of "My Name Is Earl". Now after finding out about the plot and having to work to get the plot, I'm turned off from even the idea of watching it. If I understood it from the jump, maybe a fine young lady could have crossed her oiled up legs while wearing a strapless dress and open-toed heels could have convinced me to trudge through it.

Wait. Did he destroy these people's lives by auditing them? Ya see. Information like THAT should have been in the trailer!

Robert Townsend shoulda hit that when he had the chance! Remember when she played that crack head in that movie with DMX. I guess for Earl Simmons it was art imitating life. Anyway Reagan Gomez-Preston is on the cover of Kang Mag half naked and we should look.

Zilla Says x WYDU x Ace Jones x Kooley High - Burn After Listening

Man, Ace Jones did again. He got two award-winning, respected, legendary blogs together with the illest up and coming artists out of NC to bring you the hotness...for the free.

Hot damn, you are so welcome.

In the not to distant past two bloggers got to talking; as bloggers are apt to do. As they were sharing stories and bouncing ideas off of each other, they found that they had a lot in common but one thing in particular.....an infatuation with a new hip hop collective called Kooley High.

Bloggers are leading the way in this new era of hip hop music. They are an important means of introducing new music to the public and thereby the gatekeepers/taste makers of the game. In their efforts to use their voice to take part in the culture they love, sometimes in becoming a gatekeeper you quit being a fan. Sharing the same sentiment, these two bloggers agreed that Kooley High were one of the few new acts that were making music that gave them the feeling of a fan again. So with this mixtape they decided to use their websites not only to introduce fans to the great music from Kooley High but also to show gratitude to they group as genuine fans of the music.

Zillz (of Zillasays.com) and Travis (of wydu.com) went hard. Swiping tracks from myspace pages, contacting friends of friends, and requesting the services of an N.C. representative by the name of Ace Jones to make it happen. "Burn After Listening" is a compilation of exclusive and unreleased content from Kooley High. Apart from the 6 group members, the tape features artists such as; Median, Chaundon, & Edgar Allen Floe. With production from 9th Wonder and others. Enjoy! And make sure to check out the websites Kooley High, Zilla Says, WYDU.

Shouts to Travis, Ace and Kooley.
