What the slave-owning Jefferson meant was that if we don't keep our eyes on politicians like him, our freedoms could go away. That's the hardest thing about our stupid system is that serious wisdom can come from seriously questionable sources. So, flash-forward a couple hundred years and you've got Obama, the first black president, saying stuff like "My administration will not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens..."
The catch is, President Obama said, back during his 2008 campaign, that he'd close Guantanamo, where much of the "indefinite detentions" are still going on to this day. This violates the sixth amendment of the Bill of Rights, which promises a quick and speedy trial. So, what do we do? NOT vote for Obama in 2012?
Who else can we vote for? If you're willing to look past the fact that Republicans are the source of many (if not most) of the problems facing America today, maybe you want to consider one of their guys. You may wonder what the leading candidates in the so-called "Grand Old Party" think about that National Defense Authorization Act of 2012 that Obama signed, that, among other things, allows for indefinite detention of terror suspects.
Mitt Romney, is in the lead currently (though that could change). If you look at his official site, you'll see that in the "issues" section, he has a whopping three issues listed. Jobs, healthcare and foreign policy. Apparently, "domestic policy" doesn't count as an issue to Mitt. I did some further digging on his site and elsewhere, but could only find this clip, where he repeats the standard stuff about how we're under constant threat from Al Qaeda and pals, and how our enemies will use WMD if they get them, blah-blah-blah, but that "...we have a very great need to not infringe upon the rights of our citizens and so it's going to take a person of sobriety and judgement and stability and capacity to make sure that we, we do not abuse the, uh, the war time provisions in a way that would harm the rights of our citizens."
Essentially, Mitt is fine with the NDAA, but like Obama, he claims he wants to balance the needs of "security" with your Constitutional rights. Meanwhile, during the height of the Cold War, the USG never needed a Patriot Act.
Moving on to the "Mitt-Romney-heel-nibbling" #2 GOP candidate right now, we have Ron Paul. Thanks to overproduced video on YouTube, we know that Paul thinks that, thanks to Obama signing the NDAA, "we have institutionalized and codified martial law."
That seems like a pretty "anti" stance against the NDAA, to me.
So, vote for Ron Paul?
SURE if you don't mind him eliminating the departments of Energy, Housing and Urban Development, Commerce, Interior, and Education! Oh and he wants to ban abortion, too. So he wants government out of our lives, except when he doesn't feel like it.
So, once again, we come back to the question: who the hell are we supposed to vote for?
I have no idea--and I've been paying attention to this crap for years. Let us know what you think in the comment area.
