From Superhero Civil Wars to Shape shifting Alien Imposters, Summer Blockbuster Events have become a staple of the Comic Book Market, in the same way that Hollywood saves their biggest titles for the days when the sweltering heat and empty schools keeps people indoors and focused on their hobbies. BTW, Hi! it's Burts.
In a few weeks, the next big Marvel event, titled Infinity, will hit the stands, featuring post-Avengers movies credit cameo villain, Thanos and his invasion of planet Earth. The six issue series written by current Avengers comic scribe Jonathan Hickman runs from August to November and will wind through both Avengers titles, as well as through a number of tie-ins, depicting how other heroes on Earth are responding to the attack.
To get you ready for the event, we’ve prepared this brief primer to touch on some of themes and storylines to bring you up to speed and ready for Infinity #1 next Wednesday:
“We need to get bigger,” is the mantra of the main Avengers title. Together, Steve Rogers (Captain America) and Tony Stark (Iron Man) begin an initiative to expand the team to face larger and more dangerous threats. Bombings of Earth lead the Avengers to Mars, where the team encounters a group of aliens, led by a mysterious being called Ex Nihilo, a servant of a mysterious race called “The Builders,” who have tasked him with the destruction of planets throughout the Universe.
After quickly dispatching the original team of Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Thor, Iron Man and Captain America, Ex Nihilo sends the defeated Captain back to Earth, as a symbol of the coming destruction. Rogers instead actives the Avengers Protocol, summoning a full roster that includes big names such as Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, Hyperion and more to rescue his team and bring Ex Nihilo to justice.
In the fact of defeat, Ex Nihilo reveals that rather than destroy life on Earth through violence, he will change life on Earth through evolution. The bombs that the Avengers had perceived as destroying the various cities actually turned them into “Evolutionary Sites,” making Earth sentient without the Avengers knowledge.
After several adventures, the sites have begun to activate, and the team springs into action to limit the damage across Earth. One of the sites in Australia has begun to emit messages throughout the stars, alerting the Builders to its existence, and beginning their journey to the planet.
“All things die,” is the motto of the title, New Avengers, the darker underbelly of the super heroic Avengers team. While the main book explores the ideas and thoughts about life, New Avengers focuses on the adventures and problems of the Illuminati, a group comprised of many of the Marvel Universe’s smartest and most important minds, brought together to share information and exchange information. This roster includes figures like Iron Man, Beast, Black Panther and Doctor Strange.
In a chance encounter in the jungles of Wakanda, the Black Panther stumbles into an overlapping of realities and watches as a woman named Black Swan destroys an entire planet. After apprehending her, she volunteers the information that for some purpose, Earths in the multi-verse are beginning to overlap, these “incursions,” often result in either the destruction of one or both of the Earths.
These incursions continue to occur more and more frequently with efforts to protect their home planet getting increasingly violent. First leading to the destruction of the Infinity Gauntlet and eventually sacrificing a planet to a parallel universe’s Galactus.
Now, as the Avengers leave Earth to face the Builders, and Thanos prepares his invasion of Earth, an incursion seems almost inevitable and will force the Illuminati to initiate plans and cross lines that they may have previously sworn never to do.
Infinity kicks off August 14th and will feature art from superstar artists Jerome Opena, Dustin Weaver, Adam Kubert, Leinil Yu and many more high profile names in comics.
